5 pages of knowledge are combined to make a Tome of Knowledge, which is then used to level your artisans through the various tiers and ranks. Each level seems to only require one tome according to the current Diablo 3 beta test. Just from the limited knowledge we have of artisans at the moment, we can speculate that you will need 50 times to get to Exalted, the highest artisan rank. That is just for one of them, remember there are two other artisans; The Blacksmith and The Mystic. Along with these tomes, you also need a certain amount of crafting materials and a sum of gold as well.
An example taken from the Blacksmith artisan in the F&F beta test:
Total to advance to Tier 2 (Journeyman):
5 Tome of Training, 30 Common Scraps, 2750 Gold
Total to advance to Tier 3 (Adept):
5 Tome of Training, 30 Common Scraps, 5500 Gold
Total to advance to Tier 4 (Master):
5 Tome of Training, 30 Common Scraps, 11500 Gold
Total to advance to Tier 5 (Grandmaster):
5 Tome of Training, 20 Common Scrap, 10 Assorted Fragments, 25500 Gold.
As you can see the amount of gold scales higher and higher as you progress through each rank and level. Remember that the above example lumps all 5 levels together for each rank. Artisans are going to be a gold/materials sink along with upgrading your shared stash (bank).
From the above image, taken of the blacksmith, you can see that the artisan is at rank 3, Adept and also at level 3 out of the 5 you need to progress to the next rank. To train this level, you need 1 tome of knowledge, 5 common scraps, and 2000 gold. After training it, you will unlock new recipes; Adept Morning Star and Adept Shuko.

Jeweler Gems and Crafting Materials:
Crafting reagents include the 6 types of raw gems. There are 14 different tiers per type. So this means everything below tier 14, Radiant Star, is a crafting material used to create the next tier up from it. According to some old news, gems were only supposed to drop up to level 5 and you have to have a jeweler to create anything higher.
However in an interview they had mentioned they wanted to up the rank that drops off monsters but this is unconfirmed.
